With holidays underway and all the wonderful times that they bring, we as parents also know it can wreak havoc with our childrens’ schedules. There may be a lot of time in the car, waiting in lines, or awkward silences with great Aunt Mary that the children haven’t seen in years. For these times, it is handy to have some tools in your back pocket that you can use anywhere to pass some time or start a conversation. These will work with any age child, which makes them even more handy.
These are beneficial because they provide a few quick questions to change the topic or perk up a conversation in a hurry. Some of my favorites are “Would you rather…?” questions. Some of my go-to questions come from a teacher named Rachel Lynette. Here are some of the ones that almost always get a fun response. Make sure to always ask “Why?” after the child makes a choice, to keep the conversation going. Their reasons are usually the most interesting part!
-
Would you rather have bright blue teeth or bright blue hair?
-
Would you rather be able to fly or turn invisible?
-
Would you rather lose one arm or one leg?
-
Would you rather have a key that can unlock any door or have a secret room that no one can enter except you?
-
Would you rather take care of 14 cats or take care of one boa constrictor?
-
Would you rather live in a tree house or live in a house boat?
-
Would you rather eat five live beetles or one dead frog?
-
Would you rather have one eye in the middle of your head (like a Cyclops) or have two noses?
-
Would you rather be incredibly wealthy, but never fall in love or get married, or would you rather have a happy marriage but be poor?
-
Would you rather be the best player on a team that always loses, or be the worst player on a team that always wins?
-
Would you rather be able to rewind time or to freeze time?
If you google “Would you rather questions” you will find a slew more, appropriate for various ages. These are great for traveling, dinner time, or any down time when a new conversational topic is needed!
I’ll have to try this next time we are in the car on a long trip!
