I think back to the pioneers. No, not those pioneer in the covered wagons! I am talking about Samuel Orton, Anna Gillingham, Bessie Stillman and their colleagues who were determined to figure out how to help children suffering from “word blindness”. Through perseverance, determination, and study, these people are the pioneers of reading!
Thanks to them and subsequent continued research in dyslexia, there are now diagnostic tools and techniques that can identify children early, before they experience reading failure. Furthermore, we know that functional MRI’s clearly
support effective structured reading instruction can actually rewire the key language areas in the brain.
I hope that I can meet some of the “future pioneers” in reading research. Who knows, they may just be one of our dyslexic students sitting in a classroom right now. They too have perseverance and determination!
